Settled in the early 1600's, Chesterfield County is steeped in history. Five historic villages remain: Bon Air, Midlothian, the site of the first coal mine in America, Chester, Ettrick and Matoaca. All of these villages retain their quiet, rural charm, surrounded by the pristine beauty of Chesterfield County, VA.
The county has 446 square miles of land that includes more than 8,700 acres of woodlands and public parks, a true joy for nature enthusiasts. Bounded by the Appomattox and James rivers, along with the 3000 acre Lake Chesdin to the south and Swift Creek to the west, Chesterfield County is a paradise for hunters and birdwatchers alike.
Located two hours from Virginia Beach, the lovely Blue Ridge Parkway, as well as Washington D.C., Chesterfield County is in the heart of it all. The Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens theme parks are each less than an hour's drive.
Chesterfield County is centrally situated on the eastern seaboard, making it within a one-day drive to 50 % of the U.S. population. Local businesses find themselves halfway between the markets of the north and the south with easy access to Interstates 64, 95, 85, and 295. The Chesterfield County Airport is located at the center of a triangle formed by the rapidly growing cities of Richmond, Petersburg and Hopewell. The sprawling, thriving city of Richmond overlaps into Chesterfield County's borders, and the Richmond International Airport along with the Port of Richmond are available for local business usage.
The county seat is Chesterfield where the first iron furnace was built, and the towns of Bellwood, and Moseley are other suburban choices for residency for the County population of 209,000 (census 2000). The climate is moderate and temperate, with four full seasons and gentle winters, allowing an active outdoor lifestyle for Chesterfield County residents.
The Chesterfield County Department of Economic Development (CCED) is working along with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to ensure Chesterfield ,VA's sure and steady growth, while maintaining its supreme quality of life. Chesterfield has two enterprise zones and there are many state and local incentives for new and expanding businesses. The Commonwealth of Virginia has one of the lowest sales taxes in the nation, only 4.5%. At present, forty-four internationally owned companies representing eleven different countries, have operations in Chesterfield.
