Interstate 85:
I-85 In Virginia is a 69 mile interstate with its
terminus in Petersburg, Virginia, where it merges with
Interstate 95.
I-85 enters Virginia in Mecklenburg County, VA at the
North Carolina border in the County of Warren.
Interstate 85’s main thrust is as a connector from The
Atlanta Georgia area to the Mid Atlantic States and to
I-95.
Vehicle traffic along the four lanes of I-85 is almost
25% large commercial trucks and the daily vehicle counts
are quite consistent. This short stretch through
Virginia visits some of the state’s less populated
areas, and is mostly forested terrain and gently rolling
hills. There are no incorporated cities along I-85’s
extreme southern portion; of the few cities it passes,
South Hill, VA with a population of approximately 4,500
is the largest. This area is better known as the last
bastion of quiet rural highway as you head north into
the busy raucous roadways of the Mid Atlantic corridor.
The only auxiliary route off of I-85 in Virginia is
I-785 and it is tentatively planned for completion in
mid 2011. I-785 will run 45 miles from Interstate 40 and
Interstate 85 in Greensboro, North Carolina, to U.S.
Route 29; I-785 will terminate at U.S. Route 58 / U.S.
Route 360 in Danville, Virginia. It will not connect
directly to I-85 under the current stage of
construction.
