Mineral is the only other town in this 511 square
mile region. Formed in 1742, Louisa County took its
name in honor of Princess Louise of Great Britain.
Princess Louise was the wife of
King Frederick V of Denmark and the youngest
daughter of
King George II.
Patrick Henry, a notable local, called Louisa County
home for some time during the 1760’s. In 1765, Henry
earned a seat representing Louisa County in the
House of Burgesses.
The Town of Louisa
developed around the court until formally established in
1873. Louisa’s central
VA location was directly in the path of major
historical events such as the Revolutionary and Civil
wars. The
Battle of Trevilian Station took place in western
Louisa County and it was from Cuckoo Tavern on June 3,
1871 that
Jack Jouett rode through the night to warn
Governor Thomas Jefferson that the British were
coming.
Today, Louisa County
boasts a thriving economy, with a strong base in
agriculture. Three commercial areas in Louisa and
Mineral accommodate the retail and service needs for the
region, while access to a wide range of retail
establishments are available in the
Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and
Richmond areas. Louisa reaps significant benefits
from its location in this prosperous region, with major
business markets within a 500-mile radius. The
North Anna Nuclear Power Station provides
electricity and career opportunities. The power plant
produces warm water that eventually flows into Lake
Anna, creating the environment for some of Central VA’s
best fishing.
