New Kent,
Virginia carries a rich and colorful past into a

When New Kent’s written
history began, it held the longhouses of Native American
Indian
Chief Powhatan and his daughter
Pocahontas. Captured by Indians in western New Kent
County,
Captain John Smith met the two here in 1607. New
Kent saw the birth of
Martha Custis and witnessed her marriage to George
Washington in
St. Peter's Church in 1759. First Lady
Letitia Tyler also came from New Kent.
Today
New Kent, VA boasts 13,463 residents, (Census
2000 data). Covering 212 square miles, most of New
Kent property is two to three-acre parcels, small farms,
and planned large-lot subdivisions. As one of
Virginia’s fastest growing counties, far-seeing civic

only 15 miles from
Richmond and
Williamsburg, has access to
Interstate Highways 295 and 64. The seaport city of
Norfolk lies 60 miles to the southeast, and
Washington DC, 100 miles to the north. Fifty-five
percent of America's population resides within 750 miles
of New Kent.
New Kent residents pride

public school system. Within a 40-mile radius, 15
colleges and universities provide higher learning.

College of William and Mary,
Hampton University and the
Virginia Commonwealth University. New Kent boasts
