Powhatan,
Virginia, also known as Powhatan Courthouse, lies
along the borders of the bustling
Richmond Metropolitan Area. This modestly
sized community serves as the seat of
Powhatan County, which sprawls throughout a 262
square mile area. Estimated population in 2004
increased by 15.59% to 25,866 over the
2000 Census figure of 22,377.
Powhatan was named in
honor of
Indian Chief Powhatan, who was the father of
Pocahontas. The historic
James River forms the northern border of the county,
while the
Appomattox River forms the southern border.
Powhatan nestles in the
Central Piedmont region of
VA, where gentle undulating hills with elevations
that range between 150 and 400 feet are the norm.
Capital One Financial,
Philip Morris USA and White Oak Semiconductor are
among the largest employers in the region. The local
workforce takes advantage of the resources provided by
the prestigious
Virginia Bio Technology Research Park and the many
Fortune 500 corporations in the
Richmond metro area. Powhatan County citizens earn
an average median household income of $53,992, which
ranks well above the national average of $41,994. The
unemployment rates continue to fall in the region, and
recently fell to the lowest rate on record.
More than 1,700 of VA’s
225,000 horses are stabled in Powhatan County. The
equestrian industry accounts for 24,450 jobs statewide,
90 of which are in the immediate region. Powhatan
operates numerous equestrian related clubs and
businesses, such as farm and feed stores, riding
instruction, and veterinary services.
Powhatan County
boasts a full range of civic, social and
recreational activities, enviable for such a small
community. There are two 18-hole golf courses, with
plans for a 27-hole course at the
Virginia State Golf Association golf center. This
vibrant community hosts public playgrounds and athletic
facilities that include baseball and soccer fields.
Fighting Creek Park, which encompasses 200-acres, is
a new addition to Powhatan County. Plans for the park
feature scenic hiking trails, a library, a National
Guard Armory and YMCA facility.
Midlothian Family YMCA
provides an exciting summer camp, called Camp Saponi, as
well as a before and after school program for local
students. Residents have access to private swimming
pools for summer water play. Nearly 5,000 acres, owned
by the
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries,
provide a safe locale for fishing and hunting.
Community celebrations in Powhatan include the Festival
of the Grape, held each October.
Powhatan County Schools
operates five schools that include two elementary
schools, a middle school, a junior high school and a new
high school. Although Powhatan County does not have any
major colleges or universities, residents have
convenient access to several higher learning facilities
in the region. Nearby in
Richmond, facilities include
Strayer University, the
University of Richmond,
Virginia Commonwealth University and
Virginia State University.
