Powhatan, Virginia, also known as Powhatan Courthouse, lies along the borders of the bustling Richmond Metropolitan Area.  This modestly sized community serves as the seat of Powhatan County, which sprawls throughout a 262 square mile area.  Estimated population in 2004 increased by 15.59% to 25,866 over the 2000 Census figure of 22,377.

Powhatan was named in honor of Indian Chief Powhatan, who was the father of Pocahontas.  The historic James River forms the northern border of the county, while the Appomattox River forms the southern border.  Powhatan nestles in the Central Piedmont region of VA, where gentle undulating hills with elevations that range between 150 and 400 feet are the norm.

Capital One Financial, Philip Morris USA and White Oak Semiconductor are among the largest employers in the region.  The local workforce takes advantage of the resources provided by the prestigious Virginia Bio Technology Research Park and the many Fortune 500 corporations in the Richmond metro area.  Powhatan County citizens earn an average median household income of $53,992, which ranks well above the national average of $41,994.  The unemployment rates continue to fall in the region, and recently fell to the lowest rate on record.

More than 1,700 of VA’s 225,000 horses are stabled in Powhatan County.  The equestrian industry accounts for 24,450 jobs statewide, 90 of which are in the immediate region.  Powhatan operates numerous equestrian related clubs and businesses, such as  farm and feed stores, riding instruction, and veterinary services.

Powhatan County boasts a full range of civic, social and recreational activities, enviable for such a small community.  There are two 18-hole golf courses, with plans for a 27-hole course at the Virginia State Golf Association golf center.  This vibrant community hosts public playgrounds and athletic facilities that include baseball and soccer fields.  Fighting Creek Park, which encompasses 200-acres, is a new addition to Powhatan County.  Plans for the park feature scenic hiking trails, a library, a National Guard Armory and YMCA facility.

Midlothian Family YMCA provides an exciting summer camp, called Camp Saponi, as well as a before and after school program for local students.  Residents have access to private swimming pools for summer water play.  Nearly 5,000 acres, owned by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, provide a safe locale for fishing and hunting.  Community celebrations in Powhatan include the Festival of the Grape, held each October.

Powhatan County Schools operates five schools that include two elementary schools, a middle school, a junior high school and a new high school.  Although Powhatan County does not have any major colleges or universities, residents have convenient access to several higher learning facilities in the region.  Nearby in Richmond, facilities include Strayer University, the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University

Powhatan, Virginia retains its rich heritage, while securing a prosperous future for its citizens.  This unassuming community, known for its warm welcoming attitudes, embodies the spirit of small-town America.
